Restaurant Renovation Contractor in Calgary, Alberta
Turning a residential house into a fully operational commercial restaurant isn't a renovation. It's a transformation. When Cassa Tequila approached HL Contracting, the vision was clear — a vibrant restaurant and bar experience built from the ground up inside a converted residential property in Alberta.
What followed was five months of complex, coordinated construction that touched every element of the building.
About the Project
Client: Cassa Tequila
Location: Alberta
Scope: Residential to commercial conversion, complete renovation, building addition, structural reinforcement, commercial kitchen build-out, tenant improvement
Size: 1,600 sq ft
Timeline: Completed in 5 months
This project required more than renovation skills. Converting a residential structure into a commercial restaurant means meeting an entirely different set of building codes, fire safety requirements, commercial kitchen regulations, and structural standards. HL
Contracting managed the entire process - from permit applications through to final inspection and handover.

What a Residential to Commercial Conversion Actually Involves
Most restaurant owners who go through a conversion project are surprised by the complexity involved. Here's what a project like Cassa Tequila requires:
Structural reinforcement — residential buildings are not designed for commercial occupancy loads. Before any interior work begins, the structure needs to be assessed and reinforced to meet commercial building code requirements in Alberta.
Building addition — expanding the footprint of an existing structure requires its own permits, engineering drawings, and inspections. It needs to be integrated seamlessly with the existing building both structurally and aesthetically.
Commercial kitchen build-out — a residential kitchen and a commercial kitchen have almost nothing in common. Ventilation, grease traps, gas lines, stainless surfaces, health code compliance — all of this needs to be built from scratch to pass inspection.
Full interior renovation — dining area, bar, decorative elements, flooring, ceiling, electrical, plumbing. Everything was stripped back and rebuilt to create the restaurant environment Cassa Tequila envisioned.
Permit and inspection management — a project of this complexity in Calgary involves multiple permit streams and inspection stages. Managing this process efficiently is what keeps the project on timeline and on budget.

Why Restaurant Renovation Is Different
Restaurant construction is one of the most demanding categories in commercial renovation. The trades are complex, the timeline pressure is real, and the cost of delays hits the business owner directly.
At HL Contracting, we understand that a restaurant renovation isn't just construction — it's the foundation of someone's business. We treat every project accordingly.
On time. On budget. Built to last.
